For long distances, it may be advisable to use the telecom network instead of installing private cables. The telephone network is robust and well suited to meet the needs of the industrial environment with its high noise immunity demands. The telephone modems and ISDN communication adapters has a high level of built in functionality, which is easy to adapt to
different applications. The telephone modem and adapters can be used for dial up/answer and leased line connections. Application includes computer connections, remote control/diagnostics, alarm and data acquisition.
Westermo have telecom modems to cover both PSTN and ISDN networks, the ID-90 V.90 makes it possible to establish connectivity between the two networks.
In remote locations it is vital that the telephone modem or ISDN-adapters are extremely reliable to avoid expensive and unnecessary service trips. The Westermo modems/adapters
allow functions to be set on DIP-switches. This guarantees that the modem will always start up with an identical configuration after a power failure for example. These modems also have a special "watchdog" and line inactivity timer which ensures they cannot lock in an uncontactable state. In the event of a problem the modem is able to reset itself and carry on
working.
Low voltage versions, covering the range from 12 to 55 V are available. This together with their low power consumption makes them ideal for battery powered applications and in system installations where you have a UPS to maintain system functionality during power failures.
The Westermo modems and ISDN-adapters can be used to auto-dial a pre-programmed number (for example to a pager) when the DTR signal is triggered. This function can be used
by unmanned systems to raise an alarm at any time to a service technician.
The ID-90 can also be used to send SMS-messages trigged directly by alarm inputs. In the example above the alarm inputs have been used to send message to three different people depending on the type of alarm.
