If communications do not work, follow this step-by-step description of how you yourself can check the operation of the short haul modem. If the modem after testing still does not function, contact Westermo or the nearest distributor for help.

PWR-diode on the front panel is not lit
  • Check that the supply cable is firmly inserted into the modem.
  • Check that other equipment connected to the same mains power socket, works.

i837.gif Test of each individual modem
  • Check that the modem is not connected to the mains power socket.
  • Open the modem lid. Check that the switch in the modem has the basic setting with 2 and 7 or 5 in the on-position and all others off. Remember to note down the original setting.
  • There is a screw block at the back of the modem. Take two wires and join connection 1 to 3 and 2 to 4.
  • Replace the modem lid.
  • Connect the modem to the mains power socket. The diodes PWR, RTS and DCD should now light up.
  • Connect a modem cable between the modem D-sub and a terminal or PC with a terminal program.
  • Press any key on the keyboard. During depression TD and RD should flash on the modem at the same time as the character for the selected key appears on the monitor. If you remove the screw block and repeat the keystroke, only diode TD should flash and no characters should appear on the screen.
Repeat the same test with the second modem.

Testing the modems together
  • Leave in place the connection to the terminal or PC on the last tested modem.
  • There are screw blocks at the back of the modems. Take four wires and link connection 1 from modem A (connected to the terminal) to 3 on modem B and connection 2 on modem A to 4 on modem B. Link connection 3 from modem A to 1 on modem B and connection 4 from modem A to 2 on modem B.
  • There is a D-sub at the back of the modem. Place a jumper between connections 2 and 3 on modem B.
  • Connect the modems to the mains power sockets. PWR, RTS and DCD should light up on both modems.
  • Press any key on the keyboard. During depression TD and RD should flash on the modem at the same time as the character for the selected key appears on the monitor. If you remove the jumper (D-sub) on modem B and repeat the keystroke, only diodes TD on modem A and RD on modem B should flash and no characters should appear on the screen.
If everything complies with the above, then the modem is in all probability fully operational.
