Westermo Viper EN50155 Ethernet switches to be installed in Stadler trains
2013-01-24 14:31

Stadler Pankow GmbH, Berlin has chosen to use Viper EN50155
vehicle switches from Westermo in next generation FLIRT trains.
Westermo has been selected as a supplier of data communications equipment
for Stadler Pankow's new FLIRT trains (Fast Light Innovative Regional Train).
Deliveries of Viper switches with and without power over Ethernet will begin in
early 2013. The switches will be used to create the communications network for
the train passenger information system (PIS).
Stadler offers
complete vehicle concepts, but unlike other manufacturers, Stadler can provide
solutions specially tailored to customer needs. Quality and experience are
crucial in the rolling stock industry where reliability and long service life
are vital. Westermo’s lengthy and in deep experience as a supplier of
on-board communication products to some of the world’s most demanding
rail car manufacturers, public transport authorities, system integrators and
railroads was a key decision criterion.
Other key reasons for Stadler to choose the Viper switches were the unique IP train concept. The Westermo IP train concept delivers a complete Ethernet switching and routing solution providing a robust network infrastructure for the creation of intelligent trains. All products are compact in design and have a wide power range (24-110 VDC) making them suitable for installation in rolling stock applications. The Viper series is manufactured to not only meet but exceed the EN50155 standard and to ensure extended service life and ultra-reliable operation.
Washington DC Metro trains to be equipped with Westermo Ethernet switches
2012-06-28 09:31

Westermo Industrial Communications has just signed a contract worth in excess of $4M USD for the supply of Ethernet train and vehicle switches for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Series 7000 Rail Car Project. In addition to upgrading the existing fleet of Rail Cars, the new 7000 series cars will be used on the new Dulles Airport Metro Line.
The train communication and management system will be supplied by Toshiba, who has chosen Westermo as the supplier of data communications equipment. The order includes a variety of products from Westermo’s extremely robust Rail approved On Board product family, including the Viper-212 Standard and POE Vehicle Switch, the Red Fox Rail (RFR-12-FB) Train Backbone Switch and the M12 USB backup device, to equip 364 new train cars with an on-board network.
In addition to the 364 cars, there is potential for more orders as part of WMATA’s ongoing program to upgrade the Washington DC metro. Production deliveries to this project are expected to commence in 2013.
Quality and Experience are critical for delivery of solutions into the rolling stock environment where reliability and long service life are vital. Westermo’s lengthy and in depth experience as a supplier of On Board Communication Products to some of the world’s most demanding Rail Car manufacturers, Public Transport Authorities, System Integrators and Railroads was a key decision criterion. Extensive quality audits of Westermo’s production, R&D and support facilities were carried out which clearly confirmed Westermo’s unequalled abilities to fulfil the expectations of this market.
Another significant reason for the selection of Westermo as supplier on this project was the unique IP train concept. The Westermo IP train concept delivers a complete Ethernet switch and routing solution providing a robust network infrastructure for the creation of intelligent trains. All products are designed and manufactured to not only meet but exceed the EN50155 standard and to ensure extended service life and ultra-reliable operation.
To find out more about the Westermo IP train concept visit us at the Innotrans exhibition in Berlin, September 18-21.

Westermo Sales and Distribution conference in Sweden
2012-06-11 09:14

Between May 31:st and June 2:nd 2012, Westermo hosted the bi-annual Sales and Distributor conference at the headquarters in Sweden. 100 guests from around the world got to see new products releases and take part in training and workshops on the topic “Robust Network Solutions by Westermo”.
One of the big news on this year's conference was the addition to the popular Wolverine series. The Wolverine DDW-142 allows effective Ethernet networks to be created over long distances (up to 15 km (9.3 mi) at data rates up to 15.3 Mbit/s on a single twisted pair cable. By using two pairs “bonded” this rate can be doubled up to 30.4 Mbit/s. The integral switch allows 2 Ethernet devices to be attached and an RS-232 port allows for a legacy piece of equipment to be incorporated into the IP network. Other product launches that were announced during the conference are part of Westermo's unique concept for creation of intelligent trains - The Westermo IP train. Two new switches with power over Ethernet capability have been added to the Viper series and a new train switch with fault bypass feature has been added to RedFox series. In addition to new products release, a new version of Westermo’s operating system WeOS was also launched. New for this release is enhanced routing functionality and additional security features for all WeOS-powered products from Westermo. [more about WeOS]
Westermo also presented an expanded concept for robust networking for the oil and gas industry including a range of products compliant with the ATEX and IECEx directives.
All participants were shown around the factory that has recently undergone upgrades which makes it one of the most modern production facilities in Europe. Westermo has developed its production unit using TPS (Toyota Production System) and lean production methods. [view production video]
The 2012 conference was very significant both in terms of number of participants and new releases and Westermo successfully delivered a highly informative workshop entitled “Robust Network Solutions” to its world-wide distribution network.
Rail Industry Event in UK
2012-05-25 15:14
On May 23rd 2012 Westermo hosted a highly informative seminar at the National Rail Museum in York entitled “Delivering Projects through Partnerships”. The theme was driven by the McNulty report and also the emergence of the BS 11000 standard for collaborative working.
Neill Caruthers – Head of Contracting Strategy at Network Rail presented on how collaborative working was already occurring within the industry and this was backed up by a number of presenters representing the different levels of contractor currently supplying Network Rail.
Richard Graham – Head of Strategic Development at Balfour Beatty talked about how collaborative working had been implemented by them as a main contractor and in the afternoon practical cases from lower tier contractors were presented by Phil Mounter and Ray Lock from Westermo, Kevin Stringer a consultant with Firstco and Paul Dobbins the Chief Technical Officer with telent.
The event commenced with an overview of Westermo, by Alan Bollard the UK Managing Director, covering not only the company’s history, but also its global involvement in the rail industry both on board trains and along the trackside. This was followed by an informative overview of the BS 11000 standard by Andy Harrison, Managing Director of DB&CS.
The overall consensus from the 50+ attendees was that the event provided a useful insight into important developments within the UK rail industry and a better understanding of the capability of Westermo to deliver innovative data communications to the rail sector.
The New Westermo Website – Made Easy
2012-04-02 09:49
Westermo are delighted to announce the launch of our new website. This has been a major and important project for us which has resulted in a site that we believe lives up to our company mission to be – Made Easy.
Today a website must reflect the values and culture of the company and provide a visitor with the information required to purchase a product or to deliver support within an existing installation.
We have listened to customer feedback about our old website and worked hard to deliver “Made Easy” to this new site. We hope we have made it simpler to find the information you need, be it a product, brochure, manual, white paper or the latest firmware.
If you are looking for something in particular, quickly, then the search function can lead you rapidly to a product page or document. Alternatively if you are looking at solving a particular industry related issue why not try our industries or solutions sections that can lead you to appropriate products or previous success stories in similar applications.
Any good website must be up to date and interesting and with this new site we have greater flexibility to update and improve the availability of information about our company and our solutions. So we hope that you will become a regular visitor to keep updated with the latest news from Westermo.
If you have any feedback or would like to see further information made available then please contact us by email to webmaster@westermo.com where we can handle your enquiries in an effective and professional way.
