Westermo welcomes collaborations with curious and driven students who want to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges. As part of our commitment to sustainability, in which societal engagement and sustainable development play an important role, we actively support young talents through internships, thesis opportunities, and early career programs. One of these talents is Anna Bengths, who is currently conducting her thesis project with us. We sat down with her to learn more about her work, her journey to Westermo, and her advice to future thesis students.

What is your thesis project about?
My thesis at Westermo explores how artificial intelligence can streamline log file analysis within the company’s test framework. By applying techniques such as anomaly detection and explainable AI, I’m investigating how these methods can help reliably identify irregularities as well as providing insights into why they occur.
The project is closely tied to my studies in Dependable Systems at Mälardalen University (MDU), which focus on robustness, security, and quality in technical solutions. The goal is to evaluate how these AI methods can strengthen the testing process and contribute to increased automation and understanding in complex systems. The most rewarding part is combining theory with real-world challenges and seeing how my knowledge can drive innovation and development in an industrial context.

What sparked your interest in Westermo?
My first contact with Westermo was during a fall project in the fourth year of my studies. Students from my class collaborated with Westermo and that got me interested in Westermo’s work and culture.

During the spring semester, I participated in Högvarv, where I joined a company visit to Westermo. This was an experience that gave me a deeper insight into the organization. In 2025, I was offered a summer job in the Hardware Department of R&D at Westermo. This further strengthened my understanding of the technical environment and the company’s commitment to sustainable development.

When it came to selecting a thesis project, Westermo felt like a natural choice. I really appreciate the welcoming culture, technical curiosity, and genuine commitment to supporting students. It’s inspiring to be part of a team where my skills are valued and where I can contribute to real projects.

What advice would you give to other students approaching their thesis?
My advice for students approaching the end of their studies would be to dare to choose a thesis project that feels both challenging and meaningful. Think about what you want to learn and how you want to contribute.

A thesis is a fantastic opportunity to put theory into practice and get a first glimpse of working life. For me, it is especially valuable to do my thesis at a company that truly invests in students and where I feel my skills are appreciated. Ask questions, take initiative, and choose an environment where you feel welcome. It makes all the difference!
