FAQs about EN 50155 Ethernet switches

EN 50155 is a European standard developed by CENELEC for electronic equipment used on railway rolling stock. It defines requirements for operating conditions, design and testing, including temperature, vibration, shock and power supply variations. For Ethernet switches, EN 50155 provides a framework for ensuring equipment is suitable for reliable operation in demanding onboard railway environments.

An EN 50155 Ethernet switch provides network connectivity for onboard systems while meeting requirements applicable to electronic equipment used on rolling stock. These switches are designed to maintain reliable communications despite the vibration, shock, temperature variations and electrical disturbances encountered in rail applications.

Onboard Ethernet switches need to tolerate continual vibration, mechanical shock, temperature variations and electrical disturbances while maintaining dependable connectivity. Features such as robust physical construction, appropriate power inputs and locking industrial M12 connectors can further support reliable installation and operation on rolling stock.

EN 50155 covers electronic equipment installed on railway rolling stock. EN 50121-4 addresses electromagnetic compatibility requirements for signalling and telecommunications equipment used in railway environments. For networking equipment, the applicable requirements therefore depend on where and how the equipment is installed.

M12 connectors provide mechanically secure Ethernet connections for onboard applications exposed to vibration and movement. Their locking design helps maintain dependable physical connections in demanding rolling stock environments, making them well suited to EN 50155 Ethernet switches.

EN 50155 itself does not define cybersecurity requirements, so security needs to be considered separately when designing connected rolling stock networks. Westermo EN 50155 switches include cybersecurity functionality in hardware and software, while selected models are also IEC 62443-4-2 Security Level 2 (SL2) certified, providing independently verified cybersecurity capabilities at product level. CLC/TS 50701 provides the wider railway-specific framework for managing cybersecurity across railway systems and builds on concepts from the IEC 62443 series.
