Modern trains and transportation systems generate large amounts of data during operation, including sensor and diagnostic data, video footage, track data, and other operational information. Transferring these datasets efficiently can be challenging, especially when connection time is limited and cellular networks lack the coverage, capacity, or both required for high-volume data transfer.
Westermo's Oryx-7100 series uses mmWave technology to provide a high-capacity wireless connection between mobile and fixed infrastructure. The Oryx-7121 onboard node works together with the Oryx-7122 trackside node, operating in the unlicensed 57-71 GHz spectrum and providing multi-gigabit wireless connectivity. The wide bandwidth available in the mmWave spectrum makes the Oryx-7100 series particularly suitable for applications where significant amounts of data need to be transferred.
The Oryx-7100 series is not limited to onboard and trackside rail applications. Gondolas and cable cars can exchange data with fixed infrastructure, while industrial applications such as cranes can use mmWave to connect moving equipment with stationary networks. The point-to-point link can therefore address a wide range of connectivity challenges where high data rates are required and a wired connection is not practical or possible.
Thanks to its point-to-point architecture and phased-array beamforming, the mmWave link can span distances beyond 1 km when line of sight is available. Combined with multi-gigabit performance and license-free operation, the Oryx-7100 series provides a powerful solution for data offloading across transportation and industrial applications.
