This is quite common in water and wastewater pump systems and road signalling systems to mention a few. One problem is that the distances between nodes are rarely consistent. This makes it difficult to use a product that only supports a specific range.

The Westermo ODW range of serial to fibre converter is designed with SFP slots, which makes it possible to select different transceivers, meaning that you can mix and match to your exact specification. Freely mix transceivers supporting up to 120 km, single mode and multimode. The ODW even support BiDI transceivers which allow you to build networks with a single fibre core.
