Did you know that all ODW Fibre to serial devices has a status relay?
In Ethernet ring networks it is easy to monitor link status and receive alarms in the central control room through SNMP or Remote Syslog signalling when a link fails. But in a non-Ethernet environment, it is equally important to receive notifications, especially in redundant ring topologies. However, it is not possible to use tools like SNMP to monitor the health of the network. Status LEDs are good and will indicate problems in the network locally, but in most cases, the maintenance personnel are not located near the devices and need an alarm presented in the control room.
All variants of the ODW series come with a fibre link status relay. The relay is a perfect solution for the problem of presenting alarms remotely as it can be connected to an input on a PLC or RTU. The input can trigger an SMS alarm or indicate an alarm condition via the PLC to the central monitoring system.
