Did you know that a WeOS device with a serial port can act as a PSTN telephone modem?
In many applications, the use of dial-up access to remote locations is being made obsolete by changes in the telecommunication's infrastructure. Global support is ceasing for GSM Circuit Switched Data (CSD). PSTN dial-up modems can face compatibility issues with the new digital telecoms infrastructure. The change is creating problems for utilities and other users with large numbers of legacy serial devices such as RTUs or PLCs. In many cases, changing the way the device interact with modems is hard coded, making it very difficult to make any changes to the legacy devices. However, it is impractical to replace all these legacy devices due to the cost or the sheer scale of replacing all the remote devices.
Westermo has specialised in providing functionality to allow the existing legacy devices to interface to the new digital infrastructure. This very smart AT command interpreter allows a legacy device to remain in operation without having to make changes to the existing application. The interpreter listens to the commands normally sent to a modem and uses the commands to make a connection over the digital infrastructure. The AT command interpreter is a very cost effective way of migrating applications without the need for a complete change of all the hardware on the remote site.
