Network security isn’t a one-time task—it’s an ongoing commitment. Think of your network like a garden fence. Without regular maintenance, it deteriorates. But with consistent care, like applying weather-resistant paint and cleaning, it stays strong. The same principle applies to your network infrastructure. Patch management is your digital paintbrush, keeping your systems resilient and secure.
Firmware updates are a cornerstone of effective patch management. Westermo devices are shipped with the latest firmware available at the time of manufacture. However, if a device is installed months after delivery, newer firmware may already be available. That’s why it’s essential to verify and update your firmware before deployment.
Westermo releases firmware updates throughout the year, often including new features and critical security patches. While not every update needs to be installed immediately, it’s important to stay informed. Subscribing to our firmware mailing list ensures you’re notified when updates are available. The key is to update when it benefits your system, not just because a new version exists.
Selecting the right firmware version depends on your update strategy. Do you update annually, biannually, or not at all? The answer lies somewhere in between. Evaluate which firmware is relevant to your system and whether it addresses your needs.
To simplify this process, Westermo offers WeConfig, a powerful tool that automates firmware updates. It identifies which devices need updates and in what order, optimizing the process so you can focus on other tasks.
⚠️ Keep in mind: Updating firmware will temporarily interrupt communication as the device reboots. Plan accordingly.
CVE, or Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures, is a standardized system for identifying software vulnerabilities. Managed by The MITRE Corporation, each approved vulnerability receives a unique CVE number. This identifier is referenced in Westermo’s firmware release notes, helping you track which issues have been addressed.
If you’re unsure how CVEs apply to your system, our technical support team is here to help.
The Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) assigns a severity score from 0 to 10 to each vulnerability.
0.0 – LowThese scores help both technical and non-technical stakeholders understand the urgency of a vulnerability. But remember, a high score doesn’t always mean immediate action is required. Patch management is about relevance and timing, not panic.
Patch management, firmware updates, CVE tracking, and CVSS scores are all essential tools in your network security toolkit. At Westermo, we’re committed to helping you maintain a secure and efficient system.
